Huge thanks to the speakers at the first MLex trade event in Brussels for sharing their insights on how Europe can effectively defend its security and economic interests amid a sharp rise in tariffs, export restrictions, and other unilateral trade measures. ? As the global trading system faces unprecedented instability, the key message from the discussion was clear: what matters most now is the willingness of the biggest players — the EU, the US, and China — to seek compromises to avoid a full-blown trade war. ? Speaking about the current state of EU-China trade relations, Maria Martin-Prat, Deputy Director-General for Asia at the European Commission, stressed that to ease growing tensions, China must take immediate and concrete steps to curb its distortive trade practices and remove market access barriers for European companies. "The EU needs action from China, not diplomatic gestures," she said. ? Linlin Liang, Director of Communication and Research at the China Chamber of Commerce to the EU, responded by emphasizing that the EU’s trade defense toolbox adds regulatory complexity and acts as a deterrent for Chinese firms looking to invest in the bloc. Eva Monard, Partner at the law firm Steptoe, followed up with a call for clearer EU guidelines to help foreign investors better understand how these instruments are applied. ? The future of EU-US trade relations hinges on ongoing negotiations aimed at addressing US concerns over its trade deficit with Europe. But according to Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee, the bloc has no interest in a limited or partial agreement that might fail to prevent new US tariffs. “We want to have a final deal because we need stability for investment,” Lange said. • ?? Since starting to apply in July 2023, the EU's Foreign Subsidies Regulation (#FSR) has emerged as a regulatory shockwave for foreign companies active in the EU market. With over 1,000 procurement notices and 100+ M&A transactions screened - and multiple investigations launched-many Chinese enterprises are now facing heightened legal uncertainty, compliance burdens, and strategic challenges across the EU. ?? To help businesses better understand and manage these changes, the China Chamber of Commerce to the EU (#CCCEU) and White & Case LLP will co-host a seminar on 17 June 2025 in Brussels and online. ?? The session will include a practical segment on data disclosure and documentation under the #FSR framework, featuring speakers including Secretary General Fang Dongkui of the #CCCEU, James Killick, Irina Trichkovska, and Jia Liu from White & Case LLP. ?? • ??The CCCEU expresses profound disappointment at EU member states' reported approval of #IPI measures restricting Chinese firms in medical procurement. This sends a troubling signal for #ChinaEU trade ties. The IPI’s targeted application contradicts the EU’s stated values of openness, fairness & non-discrimination. Turning it into a trade barrier risks escalating tensions and damaging trust. #Trade At a time of global trade uncertainty, #China and the #EU should uphold multilateralism—not resort to unilateral restrictions that fragment the global economy.
